Hot Tub Maintenance Made Simple: A Beginner’s Guide
Owning a hot tub is one of life’s great pleasures. Maintaining one doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple, no-jargon guide to keeping your hot tub clean, clear, and running for years.
The Four Basics
Hot tub maintenance comes down to four things: water chemistry, filtration, cleaning, and water changes. Get these right and everything else takes care of itself.
1. Water Chemistry
Test your water 2–3 times per week. You’re checking three things:
- pH: Keep it between 7.4 and 7.6. Below 7.2 is too acidic (irritates skin, corrodes parts). Above 7.8 is too alkaline (reduces sanitizer effectiveness, causes cloudy water).
- Alkalinity: Keep it between 80–120 ppm. This stabilizes your pH so it doesn’t swing wildly.
- Sanitizer (chlorine or bromine): Chlorine should be 3–5 ppm. Bromine 4–6 ppm. This kills bacteria and keeps water safe.
Adjust with the appropriate chemicals when levels drift. Start small — it’s easier to add than remove.
2. Shock Weekly
Even with proper sanitizer levels, organic matter (oils, sweat, cosmetics) accumulates in the water. A weekly shock treatment — also called oxidizing — breaks this down and keeps your water smelling fresh and looking clear. Do it after heavy use, always with the cover off.
3. Filter Maintenance
Your filter does the heavy lifting. Keep it clean and it keeps your water clean.
- Rinse with a hose every 2–4 weeks
- Chemical soak every 1–3 months (use a filter cleaning solution, soak overnight)
- Replace every 12–24 months depending on use
Never run your hot tub without a filter. Even for a few hours, it can cause pump damage and water issues that are expensive to fix.
4. Full Water Change Every 3–4 Months
Over time, dissolved solids build up in the water (called TDS — total dissolved solids) to a point where chemicals can’t balance it anymore. The fix is simple: drain, rinse the shell, and refill. Do this every 3 months with regular use, or every 4 months with light use.
When you refill, add a metal sequestrant and a startup chemical kit before you start heating. This gets the chemistry right from the beginning.
Weekly Routine at a Glance
- Test and adjust water chemistry
- Shock treat (especially after heavy use)
- Wipe down the waterline with a spa-safe surface cleaner
- Check filter condition
- Ensure cover is clean and latched
Seasonal Tips
Winter: Keep the tub running and at temperature. Never leave it drained in freezing weather — it will freeze and crack internal plumbing.
Summer: UV light degrades chlorine faster. Test more frequently and consider a UV stabilizer if you’re in a sunny climate.
