Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions we hear every day — from first-time buyers to complex rooftop installations.

Buying & Choosing

How much does a hot tub cost?

Quality hot tubs range from $4,000 for an entry-level plug-and-play model to $20,000+ for a large luxury spa. The sweet spot for most buyers is $6,000–$12,000. Don’t forget to budget for installation ($500–2,000 for a dedicated electrical circuit), site prep, and ongoing running costs. A well-insulated tub costs $20–50/month in electricity; a poorly insulated one can run $100+. Total cost of ownership matters more than the sticker price.

What size hot tub do I need?

Think about how you’ll actually use it, not your theoretical maximum. A 2-person tub is ideal for couples, urban installations, and rooftop decks. 4–5 person tubs are the most popular for families and entertaining. 6–8 person tubs are for dedicated entertaining spaces with plenty of room. Measure your footprint carefully — and don’t forget to account for access around the tub and how it gets to its final location.

What’s the difference between a hot tub, spa, and Jacuzzi?

“Hot tub” and “spa” are used interchangeably for a freestanding insulated tub with jets. “Jacuzzi” is actually a brand name — like Kleenex for tissues — that became a generic term. A jetted bathtub is a smaller indoor unit designed for single-use bathing, not a permanent outdoor installation.

How long do hot tubs last?

A quality hot tub with proper maintenance lasts 10–20 years. Entry-level models may last 5–10 years. The biggest factors are shell quality, frame material, and how consistently the water chemistry is maintained. Acrylic shells with proper reinforcement (like Poli-Max) are the most durable. Avoid tubs with weak shells — spider-webbing cracks around jets are a common failure point in lower-quality models.

What should I look for in jet quality?

Quality matters more than quantity. Look for strategically placed jets targeting your neck, shoulders, lower back, and legs — not just a high jet count. Water jets deliver focused therapeutic pressure; air jets are gentler but less effective for hydrotherapy. Compression-fit jets are a sign of a strong shell and quality construction. The best setups include individually adjustable jets so you can direct pressure exactly where you need it.

What shell and cabinet materials are best?

The shell should be vacuum-formed Lucite acrylic with a reinforced backing (fibreglass or polyurethane foam like Poli-Max). Avoid thin shells with no visible support — they crack around the jets within 7–10 years. For the cabinet, UV-resistant polymer (like HorizontSide™) outperforms wood in outdoor conditions. Pressure-treated wood frames are still used by quality manufacturers; avoid tubular plastic or steel frames.

Should I buy new or used?

New gives you warranty coverage, known history, and current technology. Used can save 30–60% but carries real risk — hidden leaks, worn pumps, outdated controls, and no warranty. If buying used, inspect it full of water with jets running, check all seals, and have a technician evaluate it before you commit. For a complex installation like a rooftop, we strongly recommend buying new.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Financing options are available at checkout. Contact us at 1-888-807-2479 for current terms and to discuss options that work for your budget.

Installation & Delivery

What does my hot tub need to sit on?

It needs a flat, level, structurally sound surface capable of supporting the full weight when filled. A 4″ reinforced concrete slab is ideal. A reinforced deck works if properly engineered. Gravel pads with compacted base work for some lighter models. Never place a hot tub directly on grass, soil, or an unrated deck surface.

Can I install a hot tub on a rooftop deck?

Yes — it’s one of our specialties. The key factors are your deck’s live load rating (confirmed by a structural engineer), the tub’s dry weight and distributed load in PSF, and how it gets there (crane, elevator, or stairwell carry). Compact models like the Buenospa Atlanta (29.5” tall, 500 lbs dry, ~72 PSF filled) are specifically designed for this. We provide full spec sheets and load documentation for your engineer. Contact us before ordering and we’ll plan the delivery with you.

What electrical work is required?

For 110V plug-and-play models: a dedicated 20A GFCI circuit — no electrician needed beyond the outlet itself. For 220V/240V hard-wire models: a dedicated 240V/40–60A circuit installed by a licensed electrician — typically $300–$800 depending on panel distance and access. For permanent or rooftop installations, 220V is always the right choice: faster heating, stronger jets, and better year-round efficiency. Have the circuit in place before your tub arrives.

Do you deliver to high-rise buildings and rooftops?

Yes. We work with crane operators and specialist delivery teams experienced in urban and elevated placements. Contact us before ordering — we’ll assess your specific access situation, coordinate the right delivery method, and make sure everything is planned before your tub ships.

What does free shipping include?

All hot tubs include free curbside delivery — the tub arrives at your address, off the truck. White-glove delivery (placement inside your space, connection assistance, packaging removal) is available as an add-on. For rooftop or crane placements, contact us for a tailored delivery quote.

How long does delivery take?

Most in-stock models ship within 2–4 weeks. Lead times vary by model. You’ll receive tracking information once your order ships. For complex installations, we recommend contacting us as early as possible to coordinate logistics.

Health & Usage

What are the health benefits of using a hot tub?

Regular hot tub use has well-documented benefits: relief from muscle aches and joint pain, reduced stress and cortisol levels, improved circulation, lower blood pressure, and better sleep quality. Hydrotherapy has been used therapeutically for centuries. If you have a pre-existing medical condition — particularly cardiovascular, circulatory, or joint-related — consult your doctor before use.

What temperature should the water be?

The legal maximum in the US is 104°F (40°C). Most users find 100–104°F ideal for therapeutic soaking. Lower temperatures (97–99°F) are more comfortable for longer sessions, children, or people sensitive to heat. Adjust via your tub’s control panel — it’s straightforward on all models we carry.

How long should I stay in the hot tub?

For most adults at full temperature (102–104°F), 15–20 minutes per session is the recommended guideline. At lower temperatures you can soak longer. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol before or during soaking, and exit immediately if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or overheated. Children should limit sessions to 5–10 minutes.

Can I use a hot tub year-round?

Yes — all models we carry are engineered for year-round outdoor use. In freezing climates, keep the tub running and at temperature year-round. Never drain and leave it unpowered in freezing weather — residual water in the plumbing will freeze and crack internal components. In summer, UV exposure degrades chlorine faster, so test more frequently.

Maintenance & Water Care

How often do I need to test the water?

Test 2–3 times per week. You’re checking pH (target 7.4–7.6), alkalinity (80–120 ppm), and sanitizer levels (chlorine 3–5 ppm, or bromine 4–6 ppm). Strip tests are quick and accurate enough for regular checks. Digital testers give more precision if you want to be exact.

How often should I change the water?

Every 3–4 months with regular use. Over time, dissolved solids (TDS) build up past the point where chemicals can balance the water. When you refill, add a metal sequestrant and startup chemical kit before heating. If the water starts looking cloudy or foam appears that won’t clear with treatment, that’s a sign it’s time for a full change regardless of schedule.

How do I maintain my filter?

Rinse with a garden hose every 2–4 weeks to clear debris. Do a chemical soak (using a dedicated filter cleaning solution) every 1–3 months — soak overnight, rinse thoroughly. Replace the filter every 12–24 months depending on use. Never run the hot tub without a filter, even briefly — it can damage the pump and void your warranty.

What chemicals do I need?

The essentials: a sanitizer (chlorine or bromine), pH increaser and decreaser, alkalinity increaser, and a weekly shock/oxidizer. Optional but useful: a metal sequestrant (especially when first filling), a water clarifier, and a filter cleaning solution. Our Accessories page carries the core products. We’re also happy to walk you through a starter routine — just call us.

How much does it cost to run a hot tub monthly?

A well-insulated hot tub (Arctic MAX insulation or equivalent, quality cover, set to 102°F) costs $20–50/month in electricity in most US climates. Poorly insulated models can run $80–$150/month. Chemical costs add $15–30/month. Total ongoing cost for a quality tub: roughly $40–80/month. All hot tubs we carry are selected partly for their insulation quality.
